What a cool world.

I have added the commercial below just to remind us of how groovy our world is. We looked at many aspects of 'Earth' during the last term, so it's neat seeing that otherpeople appreciate it also.

Make the most of the holidays to rest and play and read and play some more. Then you can do some grid work if you need to finish anything off or add to work you have been doing.

Let me know what you get up to during the holidays either through our blog or by emailing me. bobby@pahoia.school.nz I will try to add to the blog during the holidays AND while I am in Japan with my Sophie.

There are no flies on Ben James, he raced home and posted his correct answer to Dagmar's challenge.
Now that would be a cool class trip to the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.
I hope that you are all studying hard for the Mastermind quiz tomorrow. Remember that teams will be awarded points for wearing traditional costumes as well.

Dagmar's Challenge

Dagmar's challenge for Room One this week is to figure out where she has just visited. (Clue: she is still in Europe) Back up your answer with an exact location

To help you she has given this site to check out.

Apparently the architecture is amazing, no doubt her son Max enjoyed the museum's contents.

Quillan, last week your homework was outstanding. You win the mystery homework prize. Congratulations.
Luscious Homework

Week Nine

Grid work is our big focus at the moment. Select an activity that can be completed at home.

Use the schwa box on your THRASS chart at home and list as many words as you can for each spelling choice (but the same sound!).

Also, collect the names of 15 countries and their capital cities and their Prime Minister or President.

The times table focus is 8x. Remember to mix them up and go past 12 if you can.

Check out the blog. A survey will be up for parents to vote in about blog usage. There is information about THRASS, support work for maths and a spelling game. The link to the Paralympics blog is worth a look too.

Speeches

THRASS

THRASS is going to be more of a focus for us during the next fortnight.

http://www.thrass.com.au/ArticleP1.htm This article may help to answer some questions you or your family may have about THRASS.

Maths at home

http://www.worksheetworks.com/

This site has some interesting maths work to support your learning at home. Have fun!
I just wanted to give you all a heads-up that some of the edublogs websites have been experiencing some Denial-of-Service attacks from some mean hackers. These past few weeks have been sketchy with logging on and accessing the site. They are working now to alleviate the problem, but if you are unable to access our blog or make an account over the next couple days, that would be why. Don’t fear, it will be fixed! :) Thanks for your patience.

Silent Invaders. A cool spelling game

A Katikati College English teacher has included this spelling activity on her blog. I thought that you would enjoy shooting the letters in words that we can't really hear.
Thanks Miss Cowie!

My goodness, Evianah you backed up your reason about where Dagmar is just a few minutes AFTER Georgia. However, your effort will not go unrewarded!!! What about a class trip to ITALY?! I am keen.
What a talented class I have!!!!!!!!!!!Your speeches about people who have changed our world were thought provoking in a variety of ways. The organisation and effectiveness of your speeches have definitely improved.
I am very proud that I am your teacher!

Where in the world is Dagmar?

Congratulations Georgia! Dagmar is in Roma, the fascinating capital city of Italy (my favourite country to visit). The Vatican, or St Peters Basilica is behind Dagmar and Max.
Evianah, you were sooooooooo close. I just needed to know how you knew it was Rome. Super try though.

Where in the world is Dagmar?
The first person to answer this with the correct city and country (backed up with a reason why you think it is that part of the world) gets a prize.

Amazing Speech

Check out this amazing speech in your own time. What techniques does she use to make her speech so powerful?

Quotable quotes

Go Sally!
Check out her three quotes from Dr Suess. She even included some examples of his poetic license. Superb.
"Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you."
"There's brains in your head, there's feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose " (Dr Seuss)
I can't wait to see your avatar Sal.
'Never ever wonder. Try it!'
Robyn Broughton - netballer
'Simply do almost anything to win, without going into the realm of being dishonest.'
Pero Cameron - basketballer
Delicious Homework
Week 8

Mandatory tasks (Must do) must be completed, as usual.

The focus is on speeches this week, therefore select eight fascinating words from your speech research. Define and THRASS these words. You will be tested on these on Friday after the speech competition.

Times table focus is the 6x. Mix them up, go up to 20 or beyond if it’s a bit easy for you. I have noticed however that the 6x is a challenge area for all in Room One.

Check our blog for a new challenge, vote on the survey, add comments or homework entries.

Have a glorious week.

Avatars

Gee whizzzzz, some of you guys are keen.
Already we have a few quotes from people who have changed the world.
If you have left a comment including a quote you may now create your avatar. Email it to me when it's complete so that I can post it on our blog.

Back to reality

It's week eight and we need to get cracking with our speeches for the senior competition this Friday.
Your blog challenge this week is to share a quote from the person that your speech is about. There will be a prize awarded when you have your comment published. Remember to put your quote inside quotation marks.

Our thoughts are with Lily and her family as her brother and sister recover from their serious car accident in London last week. Helena is already doing work from her hospital bed while Ashley is slowly improving. Perhaps we can send them some special messages via our blog. What do you think? Any great ideas?

Check this out!

You need your sound on for the post below. Prepare to be amazed .

Music Machine - Read this message before you watch the video.

This is almost unbelievable ..... See how all of the balls wind up in
catcher cones. This incredible machine was built as a collaborative
effort between The Robert M. Trammell Music Conservatory and
The Sharon Wick School of Engineering at the University of Iowa.

Amazingly, 97% of the machines components came from John Deere
Industries and Irrigation Equipment of Bancroft, Iowa, yes farm equipment!

It took the team a combined 13,029 hours of set-up, alignment,
calibration, and tuning before filming this video but as you can see
it was well worth the effort. It is now on display in the Matthew
Gerhard Alumni Hall at the University and is already slated to be
donated to the Smithsonian.

7s Tournament

Congratulations Tournamenters, what a cool day. I've heard loads of sporty stories from the different coaches and managers.
The hockey coach was particularly proud of her team. Asia and Jared were the star goal scorers who were beautifully set up by Astyn with her amazing skills, Scott's superb defending, Ashalyn's and Natasha's 'give it heaps' attitude, Jade shon brilliantly all over the field, while Lily and Nicola discovered talents they never knew they had. 'Kia kaha' was our chant and it worked.
It was great to see that the few people not involved in the 7's tournament used their time appropriately. I'm pleased that your speeches are complete. Have you practised them for a buddy and received feedback?

Ben and Quillan you have been using wikipedia more efficiently, well done.

Have you checked out each others comments?

The speeches need to be three minutes long. Remember to include your opinions.
